The story behind our Celestial print

Celestial has been part of Bam Loves Boo for nearly four years now, long enough that plenty of families are onto their second or third piece in the print, which honestly makes us a little emotional every time we think about it.

Where Celestial came from

The inspiration sits somewhere back in the 90s; that celestial motif that seemed to find its way onto absolutely everything. Blue bed linen, mugs, shower curtains, cushions, clocks, your aunt's bathroom. If you're a millennial, it likely lived in your house too. The print was designed exclusively for us by artist Vanessa Ashley (@digital.artisan_fashion), and she captured that nostalgic feeling perfectly... Familiar in the best way, without feeling stuck in the past.

What makes the print recognisable

Look closely and you'll spot the same small cluster of suns, moons and stars repeated across every Celestial piece. The colourway sits in cream and dusty blue, soft enough to pair with almost anything else already in the wardrobe. It reads as gentle rather than busy, which is exactly why it works across everything from a newborn onesie through to a jumper for an older toddler.

Why it's stuck around

Prints come and go. This one just hasn't. Four years in and Celestial remains one of our most popular prints, which is a slow fashion win if there ever was one. Part of that's the design itself, cream and dusty blue tones that don't compete with anything else in the wardrobe. But part of it is what the print has quietly come to mean around here. It's the one families reach for again and again, through more than one child, more than one season and more mud puddles than anyone's willing to count.

Built to be worn, not just photographed

Every Celestial piece so far has been made from our signature blend of bamboo and certified organic cotton, so it's not just the print doing the work. The fabric softens with every wash rather than wearing out, which matters when a piece gets handed down from one sibling to the next or passed along to a friend once it's been outgrown. We've heard from families who've washed a Celestial piece so many times they've lost count... and it still looks beautiful. That's the whole point.

Passed down, not thrown out

We hear from families who've had a Celestial piece move through two or three children, sometimes passed on to a friend once their own little one has grown out of it. That's genuinely the point of designing something to last rather than to be worn once and forgotten. A print like this earns its keep precisely because it doesn't feel dated a year later. Or four years later, for that matter.

Styling Celestial through the seasons

One of the things families tell us most about Celestial is how easily it moves through the year. A short sleeve onesie in summer, a jumpsuit layered under a jacket in the cooler months, the same print quietly working across every season rather than being retired after one. It's this kind of everyday flexibility we design for. Not just the print, but the shape and weight of the pieces themselves.

The newest addition

This month a new piece is joining our much-loved Celestial collection. We're still finishing the finer details (and yes, still slightly precious about getting the photos right), but it carries the same soft, easy feeling the rest of the print is known for. More very soon.

A few things mamas ask us about Celestial

Is Celestial available year round?

Mostly yes, though individual pieces do come and go as stock allows, which is part of why it's worth grabbing a favourite when you see it.

Will there be more Celestial pieces down the track?

Almost certainly. This print has well and truly earned its place as one we keep returning to rather than retiring.

What sizes does it come in?

Most Celestial pieces run from newborn through to ages 5-6 range, though this varies slightly by style.

A print worth keeping

If you've already got a piece of Celestial tucked in the cupboard, you already know why we keep coming back to it.

If you haven't yet, this is a pretty good place to start!
