Dressing kids for sunny days: bucket hats and breathable fabrics

Daylight saving is back for a large portion of us in Australia; the afternoons are longer and suddenly every outing seems to end up outdoors, like at the beach or park. It's one of our favourite times of year.

BUT, it's also when the daily hat negotiation starts again...

Dressing for sunny days doesn't need to be complicated. A few simple things make a big difference: the right hat and soft clothes that cover without overheating.

Choosing a bucket hat they'll actually keep on

The best hat is the one that stays on their head. In our experience, that comes down to three things:

  • A brim that shades the face, ears and neck. A bucket shape does this beautifully without getting in the way of play.
  • A comfortable fit. Not so tight it annoys them, not so loose it blows off at the first breeze.
  • Something they love. It sounds obvious, but a hat they chose themselves is far more likely to stay put.

That last point is exactly why we designed our reversible bucket hats with two sides. Two looks in one, and a toddler who gets to decide which side faces out tends to keep it on a whole lot longer. Our Palm / Yellow and Solstice / Mocha hats are favourites in our house.

Soft, breathable clothes that cover

Kids won't stay in anything that makes them hot and sticky, so fabric matters just as much as coverage.

Our bamboo and organic cotton blend is soft and breathable, so a tee with sleeves and a pair of longer shorts still feel light on warm days. Relaxed fits help air move too. The tees and drawcord shorts in our Drift collection were made with exactly these days in mind: sandy feet, salty air and afternoons that run a little long.

For the littlest ones

Babies are happiest in the shade, covered in something soft. A zip jumpsuit that covers arms and legs, a little hat and a breathable bamboo swaddle to lie on is a lovely, simple combination for slow days outside.

Swimwear that does more

For long swims and sandcastle sessions, a long sleeve swimsuit covers far more than a singlet style and means one less thing to think about. Our Beachcomber Long Sleeve Swimsuit was made with exactly that in mind.

Keeping it simple

Like most things with little ones, it's easier when it's part of the routine. Hat by the door, a light layer in the car and a bag that's always packed with the outdoor essentials like sunscreen. We love reef-friendly options like Little Urchin for ours!

Here's to plenty of long, sunny afternoons ahead ☀️
