When you’re choosing clothes for babies and young children, softness matters. But so do breathability, stretch, durability and how the fabric feels after its tenth, twentieth or fiftieth wash.

Two fabrics you’ll often see in babywear are bamboo and organic cotton. Both have their strengths, but they feel and perform quite differently.

So what’s the difference between bamboo and organic cotton baby clothes, and why does the blend work so well?

The biggest difference is in how the fabrics feel and behave.

Bamboo fabric is known for its beautifully smooth, soft feel and fluid drape. It’s breathable, moisture-wicking and comfortable against delicate skin, which makes it particularly lovely for baby clothes, sleepwear and pieces worn close to the body.

Organic cotton has a little more structure. It’s soft but generally feels more substantial than bamboo and holds up beautifully to repeated washing and everyday wear.

Put simply: bamboo brings the softness and drape. Organic cotton brings the strength and structure.

What makes bamboo good for baby clothes?

If you’ve ever picked up one of our bamboo pieces and immediately rubbed the fabric between your fingers, you’ll understand why we love it.

Bamboo-derived fabric has an exceptionally smooth feel against the skin. It also drapes rather than feeling stiff or restrictive, making it comfortable for babies and toddlers who spend most of their day wriggling, crawling, climbing and generally refusing to stay still.

It’s also breathable and good at managing moisture, helping clothing feel comfortable when the weather warms up or your little one is particularly active.

For babywear and kidswear, that combination of softness, breathability and movement is hard to beat.

What makes organic cotton good for baby clothes?

Organic cotton brings something different to the mix: durability.

It gives fabric more body and helps kids clothing retain its shape through the seemingly endless cycle of wearing, washing and wearing again.

We also use 100% organic cotton French terry for some of our heavier pieces, where that extra structure and weight works beautifully. It’s soft and breathable, but with a more substantial feel that makes it especially well suited to jumpers and cooler-weather layers.

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilisers and, when thoughtfully produced, is a beautiful choice for clothing worn against delicate skin.

It also tends to soften with wear, which means those favourite pieces can become even nicer as they’re washed, loved, handed down and worn again.

So, is bamboo or organic cotton better for babies?

We think the best answer is: why choose?

On its own, bamboo can be extremely soft and fluid. Cotton offers more structure and resilience. Blending the two creates a fabric that balances both qualities.

Is bamboo clothing good for babies with sensitive skin?

Soft, breathable fabrics can be a great choice for babies with sensitive or easily irritated skin because they reduce some of the friction, heat and trapped moisture that can make little ones uncomfortable.

What matters isn’t only the fibre listed on the label, though. Dyes, finishes, trims and the way a fabric is manufactured all matter too.

That’s why we look beyond softness when choosing our fabrics. Our pieces use non-toxic inks and dyes and our fabric and components are selected with little bodies in mind.

If your baby has eczema or particularly reactive skin, every child is different, so it’s always best to follow the advice of your healthcare professional and see how their skin responds to a particular garment.

Is bamboo baby clothing good for hot weather?

Bamboo blends are particularly lovely in warmer weather because they’re lightweight, breathable and able to move moisture away from the skin.

That doesn’t mean bamboo is only a summer fabric, though.

One of the things we love most about our bamboo organic cotton blend is how versatile it is across seasons. Lightweight tees and onesies work beautifully through warmer months, while long sleeves, jumpsuits and layers make the same soft fabric useful as temperatures drop.

For Australian babies in particular, having clothing that can move comfortably between warm days, cooler evenings and air-conditioned rooms is rather handy.

Does bamboo baby clothing shrink?

Like many fabrics, bamboo and organic cotton blends can experience some shrinkage, particularly when exposed to high heat.

The easiest way to keep your pieces looking their best is to wash them gently and avoid unnecessarily hot washing and drying.

How to wash bamboo and organic cotton baby clothes

You don’t need a complicated laundry routine to care for bamboo baby clothes.

We recommend a cold, gentle machine wash and line drying where possible. Avoid high heat and skip fabric softener, which can leave a coating on fibres and affect the way the fabric performs over time.

Treat it gently and a good-quality bamboo organic cotton piece should be able to withstand plenty of wears, washes and adventures before being passed along to the next little person.

What should you look for when buying bamboo baby clothes?

The word ‘bamboo’ on a label doesn’t tell you everything about a garment.

When comparing baby clothes, look at the full fabric composition, how the garment has been dyed and manufactured, the quality of its construction and whether the brand provides transparent information about where its materials come from.
