Baby and toddler clothing sizes rarely line up perfectly with age, and that’s completely normal. Little people grow at different rates and a size that fits beautifully one month can suddenly feel snug a few weeks later.

The good news is there are a few simple things to look for when choosing baby clothes that can take a lot of the guesswork out of sizing.

Go by measurements, not just age

Age-based baby sizing is a useful starting point, but it’s a guide rather than a rule.

Check the garment’s size chart against your child’s measurements wherever possible. If they’re tall for their age, already sitting at the upper end of a size range or between two sizes, sizing up will often give them a little more room to grow.

After all, a slightly roomy piece can still be worn. One that’s already too small probably won’t be worn for long.

Consider the fabric and fit

But the cut of the garment matters just as much as the fabric. Some styles are intentionally relaxed, while others are designed for a closer fit, so always check the individual product description and size chart before choosing.

Signs it’s time to size up

Not sure if those favourite baby clothes have finally been outgrown? Look for sleeves or legs sitting noticeably above the wrist or ankle, fastenings pulling or feeling tight, restriction through the body or a piece that suddenly takes considerably more wriggling to get on.

Comfort and freedom of movement are usually the best indicators.

Buying ahead vs buying to fit now

Buying baby clothes a little larger can be useful when you’re shopping ahead, particularly for relaxed pieces and layers.

For more fitted styles, though, bigger isn’t always better. Too much extra fabric can change how a garment sits and moves, so consider how soon you’re planning to use it rather than automatically jumping up several sizes.

Between two baby clothing sizes?

If your little one is genuinely between sizes, choosing the larger size will often give you more growing room, particularly if you’re hoping to get a full season of wear from it.
